View Full Version : spammer signups
i just noticed there seems to be a lot of new signups who have just done so to get their spammy websites into the members list. they all have zero posts of course. it's not a new thing but it seems to have gotten worse lately.
i just mention it because i hate spammers as in the poker-porn-viagra-take it-up-the-arse-with-animals sort of spammers.
i'm not having a go at anyone's lifestyle choices there of course ;)

I've noticed it, because I check new sign-ups every so often in case any of our banned friends want to come back to us. I only recall three cases in which any of these have posted anything other than sit idle.

Yeah, I thought you had the ability to block IP numbers? Couldn't you just block particular IP numbers, and ensure that the banned member wouldn't ever come back?
Maybe I'm blind here, but that makes sense to me.

Ah, but what if Monsieur Bannèd has a little brother or sister who also uses the family computer to participate in the Heirophant Council? What would become of them?

And not to mention, most of the time you can easily change your IP Address, in which case someone might get unfairly banned.

See, I didn't know that. Thanks.
But is there an unchangeable detectable code that traces each computer through it's life involving the internet?

Your mac address?

But, this can also be changed, so it really doesn't work either.

Most spam-bots accounts don't come from a static IP address, even if in reality it's the same origin. The last few traced everywhere from Russia to Samoa. The problem with blocking entire ranges is that it can possibly block out a lot of the Manson fan base here.
Personally, I don't give a fuck about spam-bot registrations so long as they don't post anything - and like 95% don't.

Change your MAC address? Where would I find this information, if I may ask? You can clone an address on a router to trick some DSL/Cable modems into handing out an IP address, but that won't "spoof" a new IP. You don't change machine addresses... unless, you buy a new network card everytime... either way, that won't evade an IP ban.
