Ooh, good topic. I learned quite a bit about gentrification in my Sociology class 2 semesters ago. Very interesting, but sad to the people it effects.

For example : In one of the most run down cities in Northern California(East Palo Alto), they built a giant IKEA smack in the middle of town. Makes no fucking sense, and it drives the occupants of that city crazy. As if they don't already have it bad enough...aye yi yi.

I don't know the exact definition, but to my knowledge, it's when Big Business(or just rich people in general...) come to a run down / poor area and basically implant the city with bullshit companies or expensive pieces of property...that of which the natural occupants of that city can't even afford or use.

Ok.. yuppies are rich out of state people (basically hipsters) who move to shitty areas and they cause gentrification in that area.

For example because of that the rent becomes more expensive in the area that these out of staters live in and the people who are poor and live in that area are forced to be kicked out because they can't afford the higher rent.

So basically because of these people rent is higher, prices for products in stores are raised, shitty coffee shops are built in the area... ect

It's a very NYC thing actually.

Well it's happening to lots of parts in NYC.. its really fucked up.

pigist-i certainly have known what is for almost 2 decades.donald trump made it famous.he displaced many moderate/lower income tenants when he gentrified parts of manhatten.
i also recall protests in tompkins park by the homeless and squatting punks.there were even t shirts made for the event.i have one.it reads in huge block letters:'die yuppie scum'.something with which i empathise greatly.
and don't get me started on those hipster yuppies-they're even worse than their preppy inspired parents.there's a new condo complex going up across from my best friend's apt building.the things sell for 800,000 dollars!and there's all these advertisements featuring young yups in their 20's with perfect teeth,facial features and slender fit bodies;of course the women all have wanton,sultry expressions on their faces[sex sells].i have to wonder how folks that young could even have the downpayment,let alone afford the mortgage.
while i think it's nice to renovate decrepit buildings,i do feel that the low income tenants shouldn't have their rents raised so high that they are displaced.many people have become homeless for this reason alone.a lot of homeless work,but can't afford these outrageous rents.
fuck the rich dammit.
