^heard alot about dillinger but never checked em out... I hear they play an extreme kind of metal that is close to hard core?!?
I also used to be a remo guy until i felt like splurging on these aquarians...i must admit though...In 6 years, other than my snare...i've never tried coated heads or anything other than remo pinstripes on my toms (until studio x's). Any advantages to coated toms???
What type of sticks do you guys use...I alternate between ahead Joey Jordison's and various zildjian sticks.
Damian

Dillinger is insane math rock. Some say they pick their time signatures off rolling a pair of dice, others say math. Crazy jazz and fusion shit in there as well.
I've never really used other heads, just cause I'm afraid of spending that much for something that will suck. As for sticks, I use pretty much just 5A. Then again, I'm not a drummer so I don't know if that's what it's called.

This is to start a good argument: Sabian or Zildjian...or perhaps paiste?
I'm a Zildjian guy myself...
Damian
03-22-2005, 03:35 PM
I perfer Zildjian. they are thinner, crisper and just fit my style. Even though Sabian's are thicker, I've seen them crack more than Zildjian. But some people will swear the exact oppiste.
dave303
03-22-2005, 05:37 PM
ever since i smashed up a sbian pro sonic crash i have stuck with zildjian. more power, more versatile and durable. paiste rudes r good. zildkian zs are the best

^^AGREED! I smashed 3 B8's as a kid and I havent bought anymore Sabian's since. Although I was aware B8's suck...I was hopeing they'd last a little longer than 2 years.
dave303

they had b8s at school. when i started playing them, i thaught thew were cool. and school kits suck, there all 20 year old premiers with no bottom skins and green cymbals

Just a note...I disliked the Grotesk Burlesk kit alot because although it was very "creative"... I find it hard to see ginger cuz of the big bass drum and overall the kit wasn't setup nicely. anyone agree?

yeah, my friend is gonna get one with 2 bass drums, 3 toms and 2 floor toms, so ill tell ya we i play on one firts hand. Tama have brought out new superstar models, replacing the rockstars, which i have. I dont know whether 2 upgrade, cos the colours are ace, but i dont think the sound will be much improved.

^very cool
I'll have to check out these supertars...havent tried/seen em yet.
Heard good things bout em though
dave303
03-29-2005, 04:19 PM
im lookin at superstars now, and pearl referance, and the other new kits coming out. what i like now is that you can order larger kits direct from the companies--or what i meanis like, on old kits there was 4 options, fusion, standard rock and something else.
now you can order kits with 2 bass drums, 3 toms, 2 floor toms etc from most companies now, so its easier to get good set ups. for kit a.t.m it costs a bomb to order just a bass drum, or extras
Sinnamon
03-29-2005, 04:47 PM
So true...I wanted another bass drum when i first got my kit but to start its 600$ separate... then shipping from japan, o god!...so my parents threw in the final verdict and got me an iron cobra which has done the trick nicely but if i ever come across ~1000 bucks i'd have another bass drum in an instant.
dave303
03-29-2005, 04:54 PM
the last gig we played i used the support bands kit, and it was a mapex v with 2 bass drums, i prefered using that to double pedal.
Sinnamon
03-29-2005, 05:02 PM
of course!! 2 bass drums is way better!!!...I find the main difference is that for me i have a 20" bass so the second pedal when it strikes the head it rides almost like an "aftershock" of the first pedal on the skin and it slows my speed down.
dave303
03-29-2005, 05:04 PM
have you seen the new dualist triple pedals??its cheating but, me it makes anyone sound like a bass drum pro. Gay ass prices tho, not as good as iron cobra.

do you know anything about ddrum triggers?? i know there supposed to be good, and i was thinking about maybe just getting a snare one to start...

03-30-2005, 05:41 PM
they are insane...i played on Shania Twain's drummer's drum set and OMG!!! Everything was triggered and the drums were the best drums I have ever heard in my life. They modify the sound to sound almost electric and wow...i've never heard such beautiful drums in my life.

kool, the biggest place ive played was somewhere where you could fit about 700 people- we were only playing to 350 people though.

Sinnamon
04-01-2005, 05:04 PM
I've only played on a yamaha and its top quality (i dont have one though), however, i've heard the gibraltar rack factory is also good. Pacific from DW also has an affordable top quality one. However if I ever bought one it would be pearl because they are my favourite ones and every drummer I know that has one says it's indestructible and can handle anything. I haven't heard any complaints about round bars either.
dave303
04-01-2005, 05:21 PM

drum mic placement...where d'you put yours?
Damian
04-10-2005, 03:04 PM
Well, I didn't gig but I set up mics for recording yesterday.
7 Mics
1: Kick Drum. Front head off, with pillow barely touching beater side. Put the mic about 4 inches from the beater head.
2: Snare. Angeled it away from the highhat (avoid bleedthough) but still pointed at top. If straight down was 6 o'clock, probley had it between 7 and 8.
3-5: Toms. Two mounted, one floor. All about one inch from the rim centered and about same angel as snare.
6-7: Overheads. Put one centered above highhat and first crash. Basically the left side. The other is above 2nd crash, china and ride, but angeled a little more towards crash since ride rings pretty loud.
Sinnamon
04-10-2005, 04:11 PM
nice, I do the same but leave the kick front head on and just stick it through the hole. I only own five mics so I usually borrow extras for precise sounds. Never tried taking the bass head off, any advantages?
Damian
04-10-2005, 05:02 PM
Well, my drummer doesn't have a head with a hole in it, so my only option was to take it off. I know there are some benefits of having the hole as opposed to not, but as for recording, your mic is pointed at the beater side, so it doesn't really make a difference.
dave303
04-10-2005, 05:52 PM
not really a difference. my gutarist bought me a holz, cos it was gettin annoying at gigs, so if ya gig a lot, u need one really. i put reverb an shit on my bass, for a unique metal punk sound, with other pa effetcs mixed in
Damian
04-10-2005, 09:01 PM
I totally think you need the whole for any gig too. Recording, I didn't really put any effects on there. I did some slight eq on the kick and snare to make sure they shine through the mix. After the recording I did some compression, but that's a given. We recorded it in this tiny bedroom with kinda low ceilings. so we have a nice bright sound with very little reverb.
Sinnamon

Dave, I just played/tested my first set of the new tama superstars. Wow...at first glance i thought it was just a rockstar custom set but then i checked it out with a turqoise fade and it was neat. Sounds great and the new color choices are awesome.
dave303
04-16-2005, 06:40 AM
nice to hear about the superstars. the colours rule, but no where near me sells em, so i cant test em yet.. but i dont know wether to pay a bit extra and get a starclassic performer, cos maples too damn expensive 4 me.
and yeah, dualist are hella cheating, but they sound hella cool, but im not payin that much for em, ill stick to traditional methods of double bass.

04-16-2005, 02:01 PM
I like the titanium fade for the superstars...its like a cheap version of joey's diamond fade.
dave303
04-16-2005, 06:32 PM
i bought some remo emperor x's today. im playing with 1 tom for a bit. my kit looks cool now, 1 tom floor tom, snare an 7 cymbals. ill take a pic at next band prac, an post it
Sinnamon
04-16-2005, 06:34 PM
I've seen the X's and they've got good ratings from MD. i switched to aquarian and man the studio X's kick ass. It must have something to do with the X. lol
dave303
04-16-2005, 06:37 PM
x usually means good things. damn there overpriced at our loacal shop, but its only skins, so its only like £10($17?) for al skins i got ripped off, so i dont care. tama rockstars are on mega deals everywhere cos there getting killed off, so im pissed off cos i payed like £200 more 1 year ago

04-16-2005, 06:41 PM
yeesh i know the feeling. what kit do you use? Pearl Forum
favourite drummer? Tie: Keith Moon, Ginger Fish, Mick Avory (The Kinks), Bun E. Carlos (Cheap Trick), Nate Eddy, and Khoi Li. You don't know those last two, but they taught me everything I need to know about drumset drumming and orchestral/marching drumming, respectively.
Favourite style? Nothing beats flailing my arms around like a madman a la Keith Moon.
favourite song for drumming? Just about anything that those above mentioned drummers play on. Zappa's pretty good to drum with, too. I couldn't possibly name any, though.
what are you learning now? Just mastered playing left-handed like Ginger. Apparently I'm ambidextrous.

Question for you two. I'm just now getting into recording and all that jazz, and my drummer has a Pearl Export kit, but I've noticed the kick is getting less than desired sound out of it. Is there anything I can do to get a more "metal" genre sound out of it? Currently is getting more of a "thud" than a kick. It's almost as if there's just nothing pushing it.
Sinnamon
04-23-2005, 04:43 PM
This is my favourite drum problem because I enjoy finding new bass drum sounds. First of all, my whole life I have played a 20" mahogany drum with full muffling, I used to have about 5 pillows in there and it was a soft thump but excellent for learning solid double bass drum because there was not too much bounce coming from the tight (aquarian super kicks kick ass) head. I could play very solid grooves at a medium fast speed for an unlimited amount of time. The only problem was that the sound i got would get drowned out because it was so muffled.
Then I took everything out, loosned the skin and tightened my iron cobra springs and put the beater right in the middle and left one pillow inside. got a danmar kick pad and holy shit. The boom was enormous and instead of a damp sound it was in your face. Because I had practiced for so long with solid tight no bounce, my speed was insane and effortless.
The expensive way to fix it might be to trigger it.
Anyways to make a long story short, I say tighten his springs, loosen the head (not too much) get an aquarian super kick and use minimal muffling.
Lemme know how this works and I see what else I can think of.
Damian
04-23-2005, 04:57 PM
The drummer is quite skilled, so his abilites aren't something that I worry about. But I don't think he's ever really practiced good tunning methods on his kick/snare (his toms sound great tho). I just find the kick being lifeless, I want just something with a nice hard attack, ya know that click sound. But this is just more of a thud.
He's playing on a 20" kick I belive, double bass pedal, aquarian head on both sides (front has a 5" hole) and only one pillow inside. I'm getting the mic inside and I've tried lots of placement, but still not finding a desired tone. Are there any fundmentals for tunning a kick drum? Do you tune the two heads equally or what... I'm way over my head :P
But thanks for any input. It's great to know someone has some experience with it around here. I'm going to record again tonight, so we'll see how it all turns out.
Damian
04-23-2005, 05:06 PM
Doing some research I think I'm going to force him to buy a Super Kick II Drumhead and maybe get some wood beaters for his pedal (I hear they make the click sound well). I just think it's possible his head has been beat to death :P
Sinnamon
04-23-2005, 05:19 PM
possible...I've never tried the wood beaters, lemme know how they work. Also, the main advantage i find with the super kicks are that they have tone to them even when you just tap them and they're also a bit cheaper than remo. I used to play the powerstrokes and the difference is amazing. kick pads work well too. Another trick might be to place the mic near the batter side and you might pick up some click against the skin the downside is that if the pedal squeaks or anything like that, it might pick it up.
Mr. Blonde

There's a comforter blanket in mine. It makes a nice dull thump. Fairly all-purpose sounding.
Sinnamon
04-23-2005, 08:21 PM
Naturally, I try to duplicate Joey's bass drum sound so the two times I've seen slipknot, I listen very closley when they do the soundcheck and without the mic they have alot of echo.
dave303
04-25-2005, 11:38 AM
fiddling around with the PA....if ur bass is miked up..... cab get you all sorts of strange unique sounds. i like to have my bass drum loud, so i have it dampened a lot, so its natural sound is very low freq. and quiet, but the microphone is turned up loud, so my digital effects on my bass drum are loud.
Not the greatest quality mics, but to get that many for the price, I just couldn't say no. I've gotten some good results with them, it just takes patience setting them up. Cause no mic is just going to make a shitty setup sound great.
I'm going to do a recording tonight using that mic set, putting four on the drums (kick, snare, 2 overheads) and then one on each guitar. And I'll post a result later so you guys get an idea. I'm sure the kit would sound a lot better when I use all 7 and take the time to eq/compress 'em.

dave303

ive played some good premier kits, and some bad ones. i dont think there the best looking kits, but they are pretty good sounding if you get a good one

I like premier mainly cuz ginger does, I've played a cabria and and an artist series in my life and both were very nice. I love the hardware especially cuz when yamaha bought them they ripped the ball clamp off them. I'm not crazy about the pedals or the lugs but other than that I really respect them.
dave303
04-29-2005, 05:43 PM
what about dw?? dw are really good, i have played a collectors edition , and it rocked.

i like most dw kits, not played a pacific tho, but it should ve good. u played one?

Pacifics are cheap. Kinda entry level, not really worth the cash. Invest a little more into a better brand (pearl, tama, oc)

ahh might be a little behind but I just thought I'd check out this post and add my kit to the vast list that seems to be on.
I currently use:
Gretsch RM Custom 22'' Bass, 10'',12'',14'' toms and 14'' snare (I say custom because its an endorsement kit so custom made to my spec)
Sabian Cymbals: 15''AA Crash, 16'' AAx Crash, 20'' B8 Ride, 20'' AAX Ride, 14'' AAX Hi Hats
Premier Boom Stands
Tama Iron Cobra Hi Hat Stand
Tama Iron Cobra Double Bass Pedal
Protection Racket cases, if you cared
Currently my favourite drummer i Danny Carey from Tool, just brilliant.
Sinnamon

danny carye is such a good drummer, with a really strange style. and nice kit!
david silvera- he is a good srummer, he has some pretty interesting grooves. his sticks, the dsk's i have 2 pairs i like tose sticks. did u ever see korn, or any videos with mike bordin from faith no more, when he rajjed up his arm?

at our last gig we got paid with a crate of beer. at band practise we were drunk and i recorded my drums n my phone, inside a plastic bag to mute the sound, it was so shit, lol.u cant even make out the double pedal.
as for signiature snares- are you into those? i dont really care much for them, but the best i like is the tama lars ulrich. it looks ace, and sounds good
Sinnamon
05-05-2005, 05:28 PM
Naw i'm not into them...i wouldn't mind having my own though...I like the look of lars' but i hate the sound. I like the sound of mike portnoy's, if i could have any compnay make me a signature one it would def be orange county.

05-05-2005, 07:24 PM
ahh thanks, yeah the kit I got is a complete monster, between bands at the moment, but I'll be heading off to University in Leeds in September, so hopefully I'll hook up with a new band then. I was in a band a few months ago, we were together for 2 years and played all over, so I miss gigging.
But yeah Danny Carey is a great drummer, I did a Tool song for my Grade 8 drums (those of you who are American won't know the grade system we have over here in the UK, its somewhat different I think), but yeah it was a hard song to play, it was only Schism so it wasn't as hard as some of the other tool songs, and Danny Carey pieces.
think I've blabbered enough now.

My drummer has that same kit, just in the 5 piece, and it's great. But funny thing, I work at a music store and I can pick up that thing cheap. So I think he's looking to sell his old one and just pay the difference. He says playing double bass, it's far better to use two single pedals than a double.
dave303
05-23-2005, 05:12 PM
yeah, 2 bass drums is much easier. i have a single bass, double pedal, but we have played lots of gigs recently with fucking ace metal band pitiful reign(check em out- pitifulreign.co.uk) were i used 2 bass drums. the layout was much easier, and i picked it ip straight away
Sinnamon
05-23-2005, 07:31 PM
ya 2 singles kill a double and that kit is chill i'd def buy it.
themanufear
05-26-2005, 09:40 PM
I personally wouldn't buy that kit. I've played on a few Pearl kits and hated every single one of them, I just don't like the sound, and the bass drum doesn't even compare to that monster that is my gretsch 22'' bass.

Well, that's like saying don't buy an Epiphone cause it doesn't compare to a Gibson. For $800, that above kit is a nice deal. But than again, i've heard quite good things about Gretch.
Sinnamon
05-27-2005, 08:08 AM
I played a 18" gretsch kit last night and the bass drum wouldn't stop sliding on me. It sounded good and I guess thats what counts.
dave303
05-27-2005, 08:10 AM
but it really depends on the kits youve played on. i haver played on tons of shitty premier kits, really bad old ones, and new ones, but i still like premier kits, since i know thier high end kits are excellent, like gingers. and bands like pantera, and slipknot that play pearl, you cant honestly say thier kits sound bad? there are plenty of bad old and low end pearl kits though
Sinnamon

i dont suppose you have heard a zildjian z 19inch projection crash in action? they seeem really good, from what ive heard, and i may get one, because i want dyno beat hi-hats, but cant afford them.
Sinnamon
06-04-2005, 11:37 AM
I have an 18"...i only hit a 19" in the sotre and it was nice too but never "played" one. I personally recomment the Z mastersounds although the dyno beats are very nice and def go for the crash, Z crashes pierce everything and are built like rocks.
dave303
06-04-2005, 12:02 PM
eventually, i want a full set of z's. cos im playing on zxts which i think are great, so z's are obviously way better. i have an 18" but its medium, but the projections are much heaveir. but yeah, ill go for the crash first

dave303
06-04-2005, 06:52 PM
meinl cymbals then! not heard much of them, not seen em around. the lamb of god drumming is great, his kit sounds nice, so id probably like them. your opinion?
Sinnamon
06-04-2005, 07:04 PM
i like his bass drum skills..aquarian super kicks, iron cobras...can't go wrong...for me lamb of god caught my attention with their wall of death (see www.ozzfest.com) for a video of it. Mein cymbals are overpriced for what they are...Thomas Lang and Marco Minemann use them well. Never played them, only touched at store.
Damian
06-04-2005, 07:44 PM
Chris is pretty wicked as a drummer. He does a lot of cool fills, and rolls. I forget the song but he's running some double bass and doing this cool pattern that goes: hightom-midtom-ride, but he hits the ride just like the toms and just goes back into the pattern again. When I saw him, he was actually playing on some Sabian cymbals.

dave303
06-07-2005, 07:13 AM
kool. liking the "shania twains drummer", lol, bet that was fun. my drummer friend rob was really pissed off that joey "sold out" to pearl. he has an orange county kit
Sinnamon
06-07-2005, 07:17 AM
I know how he would feel. It's like playing some really ass expensive kit because your idol does or w/e and then your idol goes to the mass market. If I ever had the money at the time I prob would have played orange county mainly because Joey but now i'd get pearl...I tend to like what my idols play...ideally my dream kit these days would combine elements from all my fav drummers..
Joey= diamond burst fade, snare, sticks and set-up
Ginger= Z customs all around
JD Blair= Yamaha Maple Custom Absoulute, Aquarian Heads
so yah something like that :D
dave303
06-07-2005, 07:24 AM
yeah, im getting z's cos of ginger. but i generally prefer tama, which im gettin it. my favourite tama drummers are christoph schneider(rammstein) john dolmayan(soad), dave grohl, and the fear factory drummer(shit- mind blank forgot name) and dave lombardo, to name a few

Record him doing just that and you'll be signed for sure. I've played with alot of great drummers, and while my current drummer is the best I've played with, I totally understand how tasking a blast beat can be. He can only do it for maybe 8 measures.

I've played the john tempestas on many occasions however i always end up with big blisters after using them. What about the anti-vibe ones? You tried them?... I have yet to.

alot of people dont like slipknot but everyone knows damn well that they put on one hell of a show...I've seen em twice and i gotta say that both times were second to only the original showmaster (alice cooper).

i prefered manson and rammstein live to slipknot. i have seen all 3

i'd love to see rammstein...was there fire and all?
dave303
06-15-2005, 06:57 AM
oh yes. it was in birmingham in february, the reise reise tour. there was even fire behind christoph. great show. they even simulated cooking the keyboard player in a giant pot, and during stripped, olli(bass) crowdsurfed in a rubber dingy

thanks for the sig comment! yeah, i play with glowing necklaces-like pogo, and a strobe light in my bass drum. we allways try to put on an interesting and cool show for people, so they have a great time, like now we have started using bubble machines, which loks cool.

right I just got in from watching Fantomas (one of Mike Pattons random band) dave lombardo from Slayer plays drums with him, but he wasn't on the UK tour, so I felt a little let down, then I heard Terry Bozzio was filling in for him, and fuck me he is amazing. He has the biggest drum kit I've ever seen, and he can do things thats just insane. If you ever get the chance to see him, do it, you won't be dissapointed, and sorry if this message is abit random, still all giddy about the gig.

yes he sure is. Also he's doing a drum clinic over here in Doncaster in August, and I've managed to get free tickets, and I'm allowed to go in in the afternoon and watch him set up his kit, how amazing is that.

ahh they are nothing like Slayer, lol, just Mike Patton's random noises, but well worth going to see live. The new album is good "Suspended Animation" try and get hold of a copy if you can.
