John5 replaced former Antichrist Superstar guitarist Zim Zum in 1998 while the band was in the midst of recording their third LP release, Mechanical Animals. Hence the name, John5 was the fifth member to join Marilyn Manson

John has worked as a studio musician and a guitarist for David Lee Roth, KD Lang and several other bands. Since his joining the band, John has proved to be an able, confident guitarist.

John Lowery acquired his stage name "John 5" by simply being the 5th person to join the band after replacing ex-guitarist Zim Zum. John 5 is also said to have a biblical meaning.
